Marvellous film, but no, not talking about the 1951 classic. no desire even to discuss the over-delayed, over-hyped SRM neo. quite obvious SRM pre-launch ad campaign was inspired by the title of that film. pity it did not invoke the same desire.
now the real desire is out. F1 supremos F.Alonso and G.Fisichella already got their hands on one. Renault presents a highly desirable streetcar in the form of 2-door hothatch with F1 pedigree -- Clio RS. evolved from F1 dynamics is the air diffuser at the rear bumper similar to that of Nissan R34 G-TR's. it does away with the need for a rear wing spoiler to reduce rear-end lift. a suction effect is produced by channelling airflow to increase downforce up to 40kg. good looking front air vents dispel heat and direct airflow to wrap around the body for enhanced drive stability.Renault-Nissan alliance is coming into fruition too. driven by a 197 horses 2.0L engine coupled with 6-MT gearbox co-developed with Nissan, propels Clio RS from 0-100km/h in mere 6.9 sec and topping out at 215km/h.

PS3 unveiled

Sony finally announced the pricing for their next-gen PS3 game console at 2006-E3. two variants are made available but unlike Xbox360, both will include a hard drive. base unit with 20 Gb is priced at US$499, and the premium 60 Gb is US$599.
PS3 will go on sale in Japan on Nov 11, and Nov 17 across the US, Europe and Australia. only the 60 Gb version is loaded with all the goodies incl. WiFi, HDMI port, and input slots for Memory Stick, SD or CF cards. the prototype specs had been drastically downgraded for obvious cost-cutting measures. the production model gets only one Ethernet (from 3), 4 USB ports (from 6) and single HDMI output (from 2) duh
Sony confirmed that the PS3 will be fully backwards compatible incl. PSone games. Launch titles will include the stunning Gran Turismo HD (previously GT Vision) and a list of PS3-exclusive games from the likes of Namco, EA, Ubisoft, Square-Enix which will follow en masse.

Sony discarded the proto boomerang-shaped controller and opted to retain the proven dual-shock controller design - a wise decision indeed vis-a-vis the rival Xbox's big, fat controller. Bluetooth-enabled for wireless play, the new PS3 controller can be wired for recharging via USB port.

after having looked at the brochure, Bush said, "You know, I think this 'Kernchill' is too small for us American."

not one who gives up easily, Dr.M persisted and finally Bush offered, "OkOk, take down this number. this guy is my good buddy and he's also the CEO of the biggest compact car distributor in North America."

built on an all-new "D" platform, Nissan lowered the engine, redesigned front suspension geometry, firmed up the chasis for better steering response. the 1-inch-shorter wheelbase added to nimbler handling. Engine options include 175bhp QR25 four-banger and 265+bhp VQ35 V6 engines, mated to high capacity Xtronic CVT (last found in Murano SUV). not exactly a fan of CVT (too artificially smooth methinks), i have deep doubts about its long term reliability. that aside, this hot mama surely got the looks and substance to take on its midsize rivals.

Nissan says that the next gen GT-R flagship will be available worldwide as a Nissan model - consistent with its global branding. the production GT-R, earlier previewed in concept form as the GT-R PROTO (inset), will roll out at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. it is scheduled to go on sale in Japan in Fall 2007, followed by the U.S. and Canada in Spring 2008. fingers crossed that the legendary GT-R will hit Bolehland too. While Bolehland car buyers are torn between post-NAP artificially cheaper car prices (a smokescreen to dilute the effects of recent hike in fuel prices), and sharp rising interest rates; another kind of price war is looming across the border in Siamland.

BangkokPost reports that German marques there were taken aback when they heard about the prices of Lexus's 2nd-gen IS250. In 212hp 2.5L V6 spec, the price starts at B2.99m (RM283k) for Luxury pack, and an additional B500,000 (RM47k) for Premium pack.
Despite having to import the IS250 in completely built-up (CBU) form, Lexus has managed to undercut the prices of the thai-built BMW 325i and Mercedes-Benz C230.
"We are making an ultra-small profit margin [on each IS250 sold]," a source told BangkokPost. "You can now see how much profit the Germans are making [with the 3-series and C-class]."
A BMW spokesman said: "It's good to see competition getting fierce in this segment, because the consumer benefits. But the real seller should be Premium pack [that is B190,000 (RM18k) more than the 325i]."
One DaimlerChrysler executive asked: "You mean Lexus is still making money [on each IS sold]?? You'd better check the price they [Lexus] declared with Customs..." heheh sounds familiar eh? ;p

Sad to learn that the State Express 555 brand of ciggy will be killed off pretty soon. established since 1895, and sold in more than 55 countries, it has lost grounds to other better promoted brands. popularly known as Tiga Lima here, the price for a 20s-pack has risen from 0.60 sen to a whopping RM7.00 over the years. a fan says, "it was like eating a good chocolate - that was the allure of smoking a 555."

but the same cannot be said for the Smart ForFour. DaimlerChrysler planned to axe the production of the patchy ForFour to salvage its Smart brand. built by Mitsubishi at its NedCar plant in Holland, the Peguform thermoplastic body panels wrapped ForFour sold merely 43,700 units last year. DC said it will then integrate Smart into the Mercedes organisation, focusing solely on the 2-seater Smart ForTwo. restructuring of Smart will cost DC €1.0 billion.
a costly but smart decision for a dumb looking plastic box.
following the announcement by DC, Mitsubishi which has its own model Colt tied to the Smart platform, plans to seek compensation from DC for the abrupt termination of their partnership in the ForFour.

It was in the mid-60s, when powerful V8-muscle machines once ruled the streets of Detroit and beyond. legendary names like Ford Mustang GT, Chevy Camaro, Dodge Challenger striked a chord with the baby-boomer generation. the late Steve McQueen burnt rubber with his Mustang Shelby GT in the chase scene from Bullit. kids of the playstation generation had driven these muscles in simulation mode. this year the muscles are back in full force at the recent Detroit show where GM resurrected the Chevrolet Camaro.

while the new Camaro was inspired by its 1969 ancestor, the crisp modern lines in the sheet metal are unliked the other retro-styled cars. good looks are backed up by a 400 bhp aluminium V8 block, 6-speed m/t, and sophisticated chassis with 4-wheel independent suspension.
the cockpit spots a purposeful design execution which is reflected in the gauges and splash of orange trim hint at the first-gen classic. the Camaro concept is said to go in production in 3 years. not only to appeal solely to aging baby boomers going through a midlife crisis, GM hopes to pry away young buyers from their current Jap rice burners like Honda Civics, Mitsu Evos or Subaru WRXs, to latch onto the muscle car craze.

27th Bangkok International Motor Show starting from March 24 - April 2, is expected to draw up to 1.7 million visitors. to be held at Bitec Exhibition Centre, the theme this year is ‘Natural Energy, Future Energy’. more than 130 car manufacturers and allied industries are expected to take part. several concept cars with innovative technology will also be on display. but uncertainty created by the current political turmoil and street protest are likely to scare away visitors and dampen sales at the show.
ahh how i missed bangkok. i missed siam pussis. i'd probably on a plane right now to the siam capital if not for the current political unrest happening there. what a bummer ; (

So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the crow, and rested. A fox came by, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.

Moral of the story: To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very high up.

2. A turkey was chatting with a bull. "I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree," sighed the turkey, but I haven't got the energy."
"Well, why don't you nibble on my droppings?" replied the bull."They're packed with nutrients."
The turkey pecked at a lump of dung and found that it gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally after a fourth night, there he was proudly perched at the top of the tree. Soon he was spotted by a farmer, who shot the turkey out of the tree.

3. A sales rep and a administration clerk, and the manager are walking to lunch when they find an antique oil lamp. They rub it and a Genie comes out. The Genie says, "I'll give each of you just one wish."
"Me first! Me first!" says the admin. clerk. "I want to be in the Bahamas, driving a speedboat, without a care in the world." Poof! She's gone.
"Me next! Me next!" says the sales rep. "I want to be in Hawaii, relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse, an endless supply of Pina Coladas and the love of my life." Poof! He's gone.
"OK, you're up," the Genie says to the manager.
The manager says, "I want those two back in the office after lunch."

Moral of the story: Always let your boss have the first say.

4. A man is getting into the shower just as his wife is finishing up her shower when the doorbell rings. The wife quickly wraps herself in a towel and runs downstairs. When she opens the door, there stands Bob, the next door neighbor. Before she says a word, Bob says, "I'll give you $800 to drop that towel."
After thinking for a moment, the woman drops her towel and stands naked in front of Bob. After a few seconds, Bob hands her $800 dollars and leaves. The woman wraps back up in the towel and goes back upstairs. When she gets to the bathroom, her husband asks, "Who was that?" "It was Bob the next door neighbor," she replies.
"Great!" the husband says, "Did he say anything about the $800 he owes me?"

Moral of the story: If you share critical information pertaining to credit and risk with your shareholders in time, you may be in a position to prevent avoidable exposure.

5. A priest offered a lift to a Nun. She got in and crossed her legs, forcing her gown to reveal a leg. The priest nearly had an accident.
After controlling the car, he stealthily slid his hand up her leg. The nun said, "Father, remember Psalm 129?" The priest removed his hand. But, changing gears, he let his hand slide up her leg again.
The nun once again said, "Father, remember Psalm 129?" The priest apologized "Sorry sister but the flesh is weak." Arriving at the convent, the nun went on her way.
On his arrival at the church, the priest rushed to look up Psalm 129. It said, "Go forth and seek, further up, you will find glory."

Mazda announced the total global production of the Mazda6 (aka Atenza in Japan) reached the one million-unit mark in late Feb 2006. it took four years and one month to reach this important milestone since the 1st Mazda6 rolled off assembly line at the Hofu #2 plant in Feb 2002. this is the fastest time ever to reach 1 million units for a single mazda model. Ultra fast-paced city by day, a glitzy cosmopolitan at night. Shanghai is a crowded but well connected city. getting around the Bund was real easy. i must say the chic and clean Shanghai was light years ahead of KL. had my pocketable Sony Cybershot P43 with me during a short stint there last Nov 2005. seen below are a couple of moments captured by P43. no doubt P43 has served its purpose admirably as a go-everywhere p&s cam. lack of manual controls was my only gripe. else P43 was ever ready to fire away at will. sold it off recently to a rookie friend. shooting Shanghai, was its final assignment.

Next iteration of Euro Civic Type-R. love it or hate it. funky and futuristic to some, downright horrendous to many. grossly overstyled, its door handles look like those lifted from a fridge..brrrrr. to be built in UK amid the diesel-crazy european crowd, such a petrol-guzzling VTEC machine seems awkward and out of place. OMFG not unless honda plans to put in that clanky 2.2 diesel motor! nonetheless an emphatic attempt by honda to sway the gen-x rice boys back into its fold.

Mazda3 MPS is the 2nd model in the Mazda Performance Series (MPS), following the launched of Mazda6 MPS. this will be named as Mazdaspeed Axela in Japan, Mazdaspeed3 in USA and, Mazda3 MPS in other regions incl. EU, Asia-Pacific.
Mazda3 MPS is powered by 2.3L MZR DISI (Direct Injection Spark Ignition) TURBO petrol engine. the same turbo-charged 4-banger can also be found in Mazda6 MPS(260ps @5,500rpm) and usdm CX7 (244ps @5,000rpm). but contrary to Mazda6 MPS' all-wheel drive (AWD) system, Mazda3 MPS gets front-wheel drive(FF).

Today marks the 15th or finale day of CNY celebrating the year of Dog. a troop of Lion-dancers come prancing to usher in luck and prosperity.
draped in colourful costumes, the lion pair boogie skillfully to the ear-splitting beat of drums and cymbals. they peel pomelo and mandarin oranges, supposedly to bring fortune and wealth luck into the premise.

Proton Perdana. built from the obsolete Mitsu Eterna of the early 90s, this dinosaur is now in its 3rd incarnation spanning over 10 years, last seen with an disfigured Alfa-nose job (worse than MJ's plastik nose imho) henceforth a.k.a. alfadana. sold as an executive car with no airbags, it was infamous for gearbox failures. that said, the Banana is still rolling out from local production line at the time of writing. Unbelievable? drive it, believe it. WTF

Carl Zeiss: ZF glass for Nikon F-mount

For the first time, Carl Zeiss announces the launch of ZF, a new range of interchangeable Zeiss lenses for Nikon F-mount cameras - both analog and digital SLR! first releases will be the fast PlanarT* 50mm f1.4 ZF ; to be followed by the PlanarT* 85mm f1.4 ZF supposedly a great portrait and story-teller lens. both lenses will become available by mid-2006.
as a present Nikon D70 user, i'm obviously keen on that Zeiss 50mm prime lens. but the b!g question is: how are these gonna compare with Nikon's acclaimed nikkor 50mm and/or nikkor 85mm glass?

my first encounter with Zeiss lens dates back to year 2000, when i had my 1st digicam - Sony DSC-S70, a rather novelty item back then. this 3.3MP compact boasts full movie/sound capability, and a razor-sharp Zeiss lens! S70 produced consistently brilliant images, let down only by its annoying shutter lag (typical problem with older gen digicam) otherwise an awesome little camera.

then came Sony DSC-S85 in 2002. slightly smaller than S70 in dimension, this 4.0MP black beauty felt equally robust. sporting the same 7-21mm (34-102mm equiv.) Zeiss Vario-Sonnar lens, pic quality was as sharp and crisp albeit noisier (at ISO >200) owing to a million more pixels being crammed into its puny sized ccd. shutter lag time improved marginally, but S85 can still be frustrating to shoot with.

The eagerly awaited fifth instalment of GT racer seems to be confirmed as one of the major title release for the next gen PS3 -ETA 2007 (duh). riding on the teraflops processing power of PS3, creator Kazunori Yamauchi promises 100x more details than GT4; realtime car damages (making 'em flip as well, i hope); racing up to 20 cars,,,yada yada.
